Angoon 100 Years Later, 1982/1996

This tape, which was made in 1982 by the Kootznoowoo Cultural & Educational Foundation and released in 1996, covers the history of Angoon and the Angoon bombardment. The description on the back reads: "One of the finest videos produced to date on Tlingit history, this tape reviews in a well-written narrative accompanied by historical photographs and contemporary footage, the historical events of 1882 that culminated in the U.S. naval bombardment of Angoon. The question of possible causes is raised: was it accidental or deliberate? Was it out of malice or a failure of cross-cultural communication? The video documents the situation one hundred years later in the words of Governor Jay Hammond and the people of Angoon, descendants of those who suffered the bombard-ment, filmed during a ceremony of remembrance and healing on October 26, 1982, marking the one hundredth anniversary of the event. Because the conflict was never diplomatically resolved, the tape poses the unanswered question of resolution."

Homerecording: HOBART BAY LOGGING, 1997

This is a family video of ours featuring a home-video perspective of truck driving, logging, and life in Hobart Bay, Alaska. A bit of info, Hobart Bay had a census population of 187 in 1990, but after the logging camp closed, the population subsequently declined to 3 in 2000. Also Alaskakids.org mentions that there were enough families living and working at the camp to have a school until 1998. The census reported in 2022 that no one lives there. Hobart Bay utilized a Skagit and transported the logs on trucks. You'll see some of the drive on the logging road to the landing, as well as a great shot of the camp itself. There are also shots of the landing and boom operators, and here's a photo of one of the log rafts: https://www.alaskakids.org/layouts/alaskakids/files/gallery/images_original/173_alaskakids-1449.jpg There were plans drafted up to redevelop the area into a cruise landing: https://www.ideaorlando.com/wilderness-alaska-1 From what we've found, there is an independent cruise company that stops by Hobart during the tour season.

Klondike Gold Rush: Days of Adventure Dreams of Gold, 1997

This program was made by Wiliam Bronson Productions in 1973. The back reads: "Gold! The 1896 discovery in Canada's far north made headlines the following summer when steamships docked in San Francisco and Seattle loaded with "Klondike Millionaires" and tons of gold. Within weeks, 100,000 men, women, and children raced for the rowdy ports of Skagway and Dyea, gateways to the infamous Chilkoot and White Passes. Follow the stampeders to Alaska and down the mighty Yukon River to Dawson City, where visions of wealth were washed away by the reality that earlier prospectors had already staked the rich claims. Historic hand-tinted photographs present a moving account of "The Last Great Adventure," the Klondike Gold Rush."

This is the story of the gold dredge, a floating giant invented to work the gold fields of Alaska, the Yukon, and the American West faster and more efficiently than simply panning for gold. In this fascinating video, you can go back in time to see one of the world's last gold dredges in operation. Capable of processing tons of gold-bearing earth every day, dredges like the Klondike Gold Dredge mined over 10% of all the gold taken from both the Yukon and Alaska. For this program, rare archival film footage and photographs are pieced together with interviews of the men who actually toiled on this dredge and the men who saved it nearly 50 years later. The story of the Klondike Gold Dredge of Yukon's Sixtymile District is told by those who owned her and worked her in the glory days, then left her to the elements. Those who rescued her from the gold fields and moved her to the banks of the scenic Skagway River tell another story.. the story of a Nugget of Klondike Gold"

Bush Pilots of Alaska, 1995

This tape was distributed in 1995 by KAKM Video. The back reads: "Travel into the world of the Alaskan Bush Pilot, a world of challenge and danger, not to mention some of the most awe-inspiring sights in the world, There are few runways here, so pilots take off and land on any semi-flat surface they can find amid, the towering mountain passes, rugged glaciers, gravel bars, mudflats, farms, lakes, streams, beaches or in small clearings hacked out of the wilderness. The weather can change from clear and sunny to white out conditions in minutes, and pilots have to be aware of icing conditions and downdrafts from the sides of mountains. The favored airplanes were designed and built over fifty years ago - still covered with fabric and equipped with balloon tires, skis, or floats. The skill and knowledge required to fly in Alaska's bush country comes only after many hours in the air, flying in all kinds of conditions. Yet, the number of mishaps every year proves that flying in Alaska is a dangerous challenge, even to experienced pilots."

Salmon: The Drive to Survive on the Taku River, 1992

Distributed by Filmwest Associates this film is actually about those who live upriver from us on the Canadian Side "The Taku River Tlingits, the non-native commercial fishermen, and the Federal Ministry of Fisheries & Oceans have very different views toward the controversial issue of fishing management. This through documentary explores the many aspects that must be considered. This documentary presents three very different points of view on Fishing Management: that of the Taku River Tlingits, the non-native fishing commercial license holders and the Federal Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans. Many issues are evident in this program: - the survival of the salmon. - the Canada - U.S. Pacific Salmon Treaty (The salmon leave on the Pacific Oceans and enter the Taku River at Juneau, Alaska and travel about 100 miles before they reach their spawning areas in British Columbia - Canadian quotas determined only after Americans get their catch of salmon.) - the wish of the Tlingit people to have a greater voice in the management of this resource. - the Native/non-Native ratio of commercial fishing licenses. - the most effective involvement and investment in local packing houses. - the most effect ways of harvesting the salmon versus the traditional Tlingit approach Students will quickly learn that there are many aspects to consider in order to understand the big picture of Fisheries Biology."

Don Cooper Presents: Lumberjack in Alaska, 1990s

One of several specials of his Lumberjack in Alaska is our favourite. As the back reads, "I've Always felt about this film as being kind of a pictorial diary about a logger in Alaska. The neat thing was that I didn't know I was making a Travel Film. I had never even heard of the word, 'Travelouge', let alone been to one. So I had no format to adhere to. I just took what I thought my family and friends back in Montana would enjoy. The result was a film steeped in things natural: Great scenery, lots of wild life, from grizzly bears to baby ducks, the remote village of Yakutat where the Tknlinkit Indian people have lived for hundreds of years before the white man 'discovered Alaska!' The Eskimo village of Kotzebue where we watch the midnight sun resting momentarily on the Bering sea before it starts it's climb up the sky again, lots of history and some fun along the way. Many retirement homes have our videos and we get some lovely letters, often in very wobbly hand writing. Here's an except from one of my favorites 'There isn't much humor created any more for our generation that's why we enjoy your programs - the jokes are older than we are!!! But, we all laugh at them and maybe laughter is the best medicine we get all day. Also,' she continues 'if we drop off to sleep for a few minutes, it doesn't matter because there's no plot to your stories anyway!!?' well now... My best, Coop"

The Trail of '42: Building the Alaska Highway, 1989

This tape had an accompanying book also called "The Trail of '42" by Stan Cohen. This video was produced by Pictorial Histories Productions and Sunrise Studios out of Montana. The back of the box reads: "Come on a trip on the famous Alaska Highway, stretching from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Delta Junction, Alaska and continuing to Fairbanks, Alaska, a distance of over 1,500 miles. Because of the threat of Japanese invasion in 1942, the highway was conceived to provide a land link with Alaska connecting a series of air bases in Canada. A pioneer road was constructed in the remarkably quick time of nine months through some of the most remote and scenic country in North America. This tape traces the history of the highway using contemporary footage, the original U.S. Army Signal Corps movie, rare original footage, interviews and still photos. It is a trip worth taking either in person or through your television set."

Wintering Eagles, 1994

"Wintering Eagles", presented by the American Bald Eagle Foundation. This was filmed on location in Haines, Alaska, by Paul Shirley. Our copy of the tape came with a letter, which reads: "Understanding ' The Winter Gathering of Eagles' The video you are about to see is a personal video of Ed Shirley and his son Paul of Atlanta, Georgia, made in November, 1993, during the height of the gathering of eagles in the heart of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, Haines, Alaska. The video has no narration, the only sound of man you will hear is two cars and a truck. Please watch and enjoy this video as tho you are part of the Preserve during this exciting time of year. The world's largest gathering of eagles occurs at this time each year. To understand the uniqueness of this are and the video, certain fundamentals need to be explained. The most important building block of the phenomena is the percolation of water. Mother Nature provides a tremendous flow of underground water into a rock strata that causes compression of water, resulting in a percolating affect going upward into the river itself. This occurrence results in the water being open all winter long. Mother Nature takes advantage of the this situation in that the last spawning salmon in North America, the Chum salmon, spawns through the end of December, providing a continuous food supply for the Amercian Bald Eagle. The concentration of these birds can vary from 1500 to 5000 each year. As you view the film, you will see snow in the mountains and riverbed, but even the smallest potholes in the river will remain ice-free. You will see trees along the riverbank that are important for roosting and observing their food supply. You will notice the birds interrelating with each other in a harmonious manner. And you will notice that the birds will usually feed on those carcasses most readily accessible. If the food supply is scarce, the birds will show more aggressive behavior and word harder to procure their food. One interesting educational sequence occurs when a block of ice floating downstream gets caught at the bank, and a Chum salmon swims on top of the ice block. You will see an eagle making a pass at this fish, but it doesn't bother to pursue or take the fish. The fish finally flops its way back into the water, illustrating the mentality of the bird. Due to the large supply of salmon that spawn-out and die on the riverbanks, the eagle does not risk its body when it's not necessary to take its food. This is an interesting story and lesson of Mother Nature. By taking the time to study all aspects of this film, I hope you will find that not only is Mother Nature wonderful to see, but all the immense knowledge she has to give, as well. Thank you for supporting the American Bald Eagle Association."

Don Cooper Presents: Highway to Alaska and the Klondike, 1990's

"Early travelers on the ALASKA HIGHWAY suggested that the road builders, in lieu of a survey, had simply followed the trail of a lovesick moose. Well, our film doesn't answer that exactly, but it does contain a lot of pertinent information. How to go, When to go, Where to go (Where NOT to go!) some fine sport fishing, wildlife and great scenery. Also a sequence on the pipe line north of Fairbanks and the White Pass & Yukon Railroad when it was still STEAM POWERED. Plus the exciting story of the KLONDIKE is recalled to mind as my brother Dennis and I retrace our grandfather's footsteps over Chilkoot Pass and down 600 miles of the Yukon River from Skagway, Alaska to Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada and on to famed old Bonanza Creek with its one remaining Prospector still holding down his claim."
